Berlin day 2

13 juli 2020 - Berlin, Duitsland

Hello again,

Today was a very interesting day again. We had fun, we had a little less fun, we had even less fun, we had some fun again, it was very diverse.

Let me begin at the beginning, which was at 4:30 in the morning. SOMEHOW Famke and I were both woken up by the loud noises from the street, and ever since 4:30 we didn't sleep very good anymore. One time we woke up at 6 and we both fell back asleep, thinking we had slept for a couple hours before we got woken up again. We checked the clock and it was literally 6:10…. We had slept for only 10 minutes… great! This continued until 9:45 when we had enough of it and decided to get out of bed.

We walked over the nearest supermarket, the Lidl, where we got to experience disappointments #2 and #3. As it turned out, this Lidl was absolutely NOT the closest supermarket and we had walked at least 15 minutes longer than we could have walked. We found out about that only just now after disappointment #8. Anyways, we went to the Lidl to get some breakfast and lunch. We walked over to the bakery section and what did we find there? That’s right: Berlinerbollen. And I can hear you thinking right now: why is that a problem? I thought you were going to berlin to eat those? Well, yes, that’s correct, but the whole idea of it was that you can’t buy Berlinerbollen in Berlin. But as it turns out: you can.

After breakfast, we packed out bags and jumped on the train to go to this big shopping mall called Europa Center. This was actually quite fun tho, we shopped around for a solid two hours and flirted a little with a handsome street artist. Well not me of course, because I have a boyfriend at the moment, but Famke had her fun :). I bought myself two keychains, because as you all know, I have a big collection of them at home. I also bought a cropped t-shirt, which shows my belly a little and I liked the fact that I felt sexy in it.

We also visited the Alexander Platz today, which is also kind of a funny story. We stepped out of the tram at the station and we literally had to search for the Alexander Platz. When we arrived at a square full of people, we were wondering: is this it? Or is this not it? We truly had no idea, so we searched for the Alexander Platz in Google and we found pictures of a fountain and a clock and a big tower in the background. We looked around us and as it turned out, we were at the Alexander Platz. We could see the fountain and the clock, which were both very beautiful but somehow we had expected more of it, so it was a bit disappointing. But the question here was: where was the big tower? We had looked all around us, but we could not see it anywhere! Eventually we gave up and we sat down to eat our Berlinerbollen (the ones from the Netherlands, which we had forgotten to eat yesterday) and I wanted to capture the moment and then all of a sudden we saw that the big tower was RIGHT IN FRONT OF US! It is still a mystery to me how we possibly could have missed that.

Anyway, we walked to the tower, took some pictures of it and we continued to walk in the direction of the Museum Island. This morning we had already asked at the reception of our hotel if the museums would be open during this corona time, and she got us all excited by saying “Yeah, they are open.” But I think you can already feel this one coming: disappointment #5, they were not open. Which was fine, at first, because at least we could see the buildings from the outside and take pictures of it. SURPRISE! Disappointment #6 has arrived! Literally ALL the museums had scaffolds all around them and big ugly orange cranes next to them and we really couldn’t take any nice pictures of the buildings. I think that this was truly the biggest disappointed of the day. But not the last one.

We decided to stop at an Asian bar to have some weird iced tea, which looked very delicious. I ordered one in Pineapple flavour and Famke had a Lemon flavoured one. We took the first sip and looked each other in the eye, both afraid to say the truth, but boy were those drinks nasty! And unfortunately, this was still not the last disappointment of the day.

But before the last disappointment of the day, we had a very fun and interesting moment first. We had taken the tram to the Berlin Wall Memorial thingy and we were very impressed to see it. There were still pieces of the Wall standing there and there were other monumental things that were still preserved, like an old sidewalk and some stones from the watching tower. We held a small photoshoot and sat down in the grass to rest.

During our rest, we were trying to answer the biggest question of the day: where to eat dinner? We both wanted to eat pasta, so we looked up Italian restaurants and we found a Vapiano near the Hauptbahnhof. So, we hopped on the tram again and walked 10 minutes to the restaurant, only to find out that the Vapiano went bankrupt.  No big deal tho, we just took the train back to our hotel and looked for a nice Italian restaurant there. We looked and we looked, we found literally every cuisine you could possibly think of: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Greek, Spanish, Hawaiian, but Italian?

It took us a full 20 minutes to find an Italian restaurant and we were so happy but of course, the whole restaurant was covered in scaffolds, AGAIN, just like every other building in Berlin. Luckily for us, the restaurant was open, and the food was very delicious. I did get a very weird look from the waiter when I asked for the kids’ menu, but ach, who cares.

I know this blog makes it seem like I did not enjoy my day, but that is very not true. Beside all the small disappointments, I still enjoyed every moment of my day and Famke and I still had a lot of fun :).
