Berlin day 3

15 juli 2020 - Berlin, Duitsland

Hey there!

Sorry for the delay, but I was so tired yesterday that I didn’t write a blog. But no worries, the story of yesterday’s adventure is here now!

Our day started off pretty nice. We woke up early, slept a little bit better than the night before, and had a nice breakfast. We took the train to go the East Side Gallery, but we made a quick stop at the Jannowitzbrücke. Why you ask? Well we wanted to go to a very special shop to do some very secret things as a present for our home front. (Which they will find out when I’m back in the Netherlands, but for now it stays a secret).

Anyways, today was a very hot day, it was 29 degrees all day long and we still had to wear our facemasks, so we got pretty sweaty. To deal with the heat, we bought ourselves some ice cream. By the time we had walked from the train station to the East Side Gallery, the ice cream was long gone, and we were already feeling hot again. Coming there was truly worth it tho, at the East Side Gallery, we could see a long piece of the Berlin Wall, covered in graffiti and other art. We held a photoshoot with almost all the artworks on the wall and we even hand-kissed each other in front of the Kiss. After an hour and a half, we had seen the whole gallery and we walked back to the train station.

We went further east with the train to go to the Island der Jugend. We could really see the difference between East and West Berlin. In the East were a lot of less scaffolds, lol. There were not many big fancy buildings either, but more nature and more homey houses. Our plan was to rent a boat or a canoe, however because of the nice weather, all the boats were already occupied. We decided to go to the water anyways and let our feet into the water. But GUESS WHAT: my legs were too short to be able to touch the water… We held a little picknick instead to regain some energy.

On our way back to the train station, we wanted to walk past a famous monument in the Treptower Park. We followed the route from google maps, thinking we would get there in 5 minutes, but boy was google wrong. There was a big fence around the monument which made us walk for 10 more minutes to finally reach the gate. When we were there, half of the square was barred with fences and construction machinery, which was very disappointing. We were not even surprised about it anymore tho, we have seen it literally EVERYWHERE in Berlin.

Famke and I were both very exhausted from the hot weather and the lack of sleep, so we decided to head back to our hotel for a moment and cool down. We played some games and I managed to win almost all of them.

AND THAN IT HAPPENED: the most amazing thing of the day. Famke and I were walking to the train station again to go have some diner at McDonalds. We walked on the platform and our train was already there. I said to Famke: ‘We can make it!’, and I jumped in the train. When I turned around, I saw that the doors were closing, and Famke was still standing on the platform! I jammed the button on the train, but the doors wouldn’t open again and a few seconds later, the train drove away. I was literally laughing my ass off and luckily, we only had to go to the next stop, so I got out and waited over there for the other train to arrive, the one Famke took. She told me she was a little bit shocked by the whole event of losing me, but me being me, I couldn’t stop laughing! :)

After the diner, we went to go do some sightseeing again. We went to Bellevue to see the Bellevue Palace and the Siegessäule, which is basically a big tower with a golden angel on it in the middle of a roundabout. It was very pretty to see, especially because it was getting dark already and the spotlights made the tower light up. We walked all around the roundabout and took pictures of the other statues that were aside of the road. We wanted to go to the middle of the roundabout by using tunnels (because it was too dangerous to cross the roundabout) but the tunnels were closed already because it was late. We did make a friend on our way home again, a cute little mouse, who did manage to cross the busy road, and I send a picture of it to my mom. Her reaction: IEEUWWW! :)
